The game revolves around a young girl named Miku Hinasaki, who went to the haunted Himuro Mansion to search for Mafuyu, her older brother. Mafuyu had went missing for almost one week, as was discovered in the game, after stepping into the Himuro Mansion to look for his author friend, Junsei Takamine, who also went missing in the mansion together with his assistant, Koji Ogata and another friend who is versed in the paranormal, Tomoe Hirasaka.

As Miku explores deeper into the mansion, she eventually learns about the dark secrets behind the enormous mansion as well as the rituals that occurred in it many years ago, plus the initial haunting which took many people's lives and trapping their spirits in the mansion forever. Junsei Takamine and his friends have encountered the same fate, but Mafuyu hasn't. Kirie, a female spirit who was forced to undergo a dark ritual in the mansion which made her a rope shrine maiden to guard a portal to another world, had kidnapped Mafuyu because he was a direct reincarnation of her former lover, a young man whom Kirie had never really met, but loved him deeply. Although Miku manages to rescue Mafuyu in the end of the game, Mafuyu tells her that he is Kirie's former lover and must stay at her side so that Kirie will not be alone again. After that, the shrine falls and Mafuyu disappears together with Kirie.

However, if the player completes the game in Nightmare Mode, an alternate ending occurs. After defeating Kirie, Miku rescues Mafuyu and both escape from the rope shrine, in which the shrine collapses. After the escape, Miku sees the entrapped spirits of the mansion released and floating into the night air.
